“Mom, I have to tell you something. I am…a…blogger.”
“Oh, Christ. Is there a support group that I can join to come to terms with my own Scriptophobia?”
“Yes, there is a group which is named PFLAB : Parents and Friends of Lyricists and Bloggers”
“Oh, oh… PFLAB. I’m beginning to like the sound of that.”
For those of you that haven’t yet seen, DC Bloggers Anonymous is meeting tonight: Check It.
Don’t bogart that can…man!

Callbacks! July 24, 2007

Yes, that’s right kids, out of the 50 some odd folks that auditioned for aforementioned choral greatness, I was asked to return for a callback this week. When I received email response that I had been hoping for, I felt a distantly familiar surge of energy pulse through my veins.
Somehow when I sang countless rehearsals and performances throughout high school and college, things had a tendency to become rather mundane. Music was such a part of my everyday existence at that point I could hardly breath without coming in on a downbeat or the fifth of a random chord. I find it funny how when you’re removed from such things for a time how much you truly do miss them though. Good vowels. Tuning chords. Sight reading. Dissonance. Suspension. Resolution.
I’m a cheeseball about this, I know. God I miss it though.
… and before I knew it the callbacks were over. I learned two new songs and it felt like we had just begun. So how did I do you ask? We shall see by Friday, but I felt as though I gave it a good run of things and hopefully the blend of voices will be such that my voice fits well into the ensemble. Anyway, back to sitting on pins and needles til the weekend…

Assume the position (Palace of Wonders)

Yeah, so it’s 18 days later, and I’m finally recapping the second half of this night… of course, the readership on part 1 was rather anemic so you can get them both at the same time now.
Part 2: Palace of Wonders, H St. NE
When we last left our hero, he was torn over a difficult decision: Stick out part two of the date, or work on some getaway story slash convincing to go to the party.
Being the gentleman that I am, I deferred the choice to the lady, and thus put my life in her hands. This is no dramatization: a female whom I have known for a sum of 2 weeks and who is admittedly bad at directions is taking me to a “transitional” neighborhood in Northeast Washington.
And of course we got lost.
Rather than fret over our pending doom, I took a laissez-faire attitude as we finally corrected ourselves and took off on foot towards our final destination : Palace of Wonders.
Now, imagine walking into a carnival, burlesque house, and rock and roll show all rolled into one. Complete with the normal faire you’d expect at such a place (gay man in a leotard, the harry man, fire throwers, and hot dogs) this place is a total gem tucked away in the up and coming corridor of NE.
There was this little spark that started to appear in her eyes as we trailed through the place and grabbed a couple of brews. It was as if I had walked into her world, just as she had walked into mine earlier in the evening. Granted, the doubleheader date was rather advanced for this evening, but it worked out.
It was definitely a different twist to the evening, but somehow both halves were totally and entirely awesome in their own right. The crowning gem was watching a man in boxing shorts punch himself to the tune of the Rocky theme only to produce a rubik’s cube from his pants, and completely solve it during the furious 45 second finale to the song.
You probably had to be there.
Unfortunately, that’s really all I remember about the evening at this point. I believe it ended in another 5 am type of slowly sobering discussion, but I could be wrong. At any rate, she’s moved into the weekday lineup.

The concept of Friday night was rather simple: a two part night for “date” number two. I say simple in the matter of it containing two parts, the two parts themselves, however, were chock full of complexity.
Part 1: The Church of the Epiphany, 18th St. Singers Concert
If you are on a second “date” that involves taking a girl to a church for a choral concert, you’ve established some or all of the following:
Let’s not diverge too much from the music though… and what music it was! I was impressed at the aggressive program that the singers had prepared and from the downbeat of the first Whitacre piece to the Celebratory Unicorn finale, it was a very successful concert.
It is so very difficult to pick a favorite when there are so many excellent selections in a single concert. I will say this though, I did particularly enjoy the Buchenberg (Ich Bin Das Brot Des Lebens) and Whitacre selections (Water Night, especially).
Considering that a middle school rendition of Shenandoah was the last choral experience in my date’s repertoire, a telling glance halfway through the Gordon Young (2nd selection of the evening, for those scoring at home) signaled to me that I had accomplished my goal of giving her a new life experience.
Following the concert I had the fortune of congratulating a few of the folks I had met at my audition and hopefully *fingers crossed* will be joining for the fall season. I told myself I wouldn’t use my blog as a shameless plug for myself so I’ll leave it at this: I really want to sing with this group.
Having been invited to the choral after-party (which I take as a good sign of things to come), I momentarily contemplated my next decision: Stick out part two of the date (aka her version of a good time), or work on some getaway story / convincing to go to the party.
To be continued…
