While exploring the latest “Say Anything” album this weekend, my brother and I discovered that we do indeed enjoy their latest offering and the track “The Church Channel” was of particular interest to me, as this lyric happened to catch my ear:

i fell behind on my nightly four-course meal of rainbow pills
and now i`m wondering what is fake and what is real
but who`s that ghost who keeps walking by my door
i`ve never seen a girl look so good in thick-rimmed glasses before.

I may be taking it out of context for the purposes of this blog, but it did spark a thought in my mind with regards to my perception of beauty. My most recent love interest (photo not available) has quite the killer set of specs, which I may have mentioned a time or two… Here’s a quick run down of my other favorite beautiful bespeckled babes:

Lisa Loeb
1. Lisa Loeb : You say I only hear what I want to… okay, I’ll cut it out there, but in all seriousness, my vigorous admiration for this classic look stemmed from the Reality Bites soundtrack and this sultry New Yorker. I have listened to more of Lisa Loeb’s discography than the average Joe, and I admire the candor, passion, and inner beauty that pours from her music. And let’s face it, I’m a sucker for a girl with a guitar, some solid pipes, and astigmatism.

Tina Fey
2. Tina Fey : Many an argument has occurred in my circle of friends about the most significant contribution to Saturday Night Live since the heyday of the show, and I have always been an advocate for the budding brilliance of yet another bespeckled babe: Tina Fey. I must admit, I enjoyed her news broadcasts almost as much as the days of yore, and now that 30 Rock has made it to the weekly lineup, I find myself more and more enamored with this one. Maybe it’s the brilliance of her humor. Maybe it’s the raw talent. Maybe it’s just the glasses.

Leslie
3. Leslie Warden : Disclaimer: my comments here are strictly platonic. Leslie is a friend from as far back as high school and I am able to say with a degree of certainty that as a wide eyed teenager, I took one glance into the bass clarinet section and I was enamored by those spectacles. It was refreshing to meet an intelligent, attractive girl at such a young age and while a romance never blossomed, I did procure a wonderful friendship out of our relationship that we still keep alive.

While this fashion trend is not a prerequisite for me by any means, I do see a common trend in the personality and creativity of these three, and I must say that it definitely seems to enhance my physical perception of a woman when successfully implemented.

And what of the current interest you ask? Well, to be honest, I would enjoy seeing her behind those Chanel frames again… I’ll have to work on that this week.

Been So Long December 3, 2007

First, Press Play.

I wrote this song nearly 3 years ago and I must admit that it has become an anthem for my hopeless romanticism.

When last we left our hero, he was making his way down the narrow shaft of a condominium elevator at 3 am, the recipient of an expected yet fruitful eviction from his current love interest’s dwelling. The events that precluded this grand exit into the brisk Alexandria evening had been instantly memorized and categorized in our hero’s mind, leading him to contemplate his next strategy in courting the lass.

He could taste her lips for days following the events of that evening. She had felt a twinge of disappointment on his face and in his physicality just before escorting him to the door, though none existed. His charm and her insistence that she was “not that kind of girl” were getting the best of them that evening, and the only virtuous culmination of the evening was an abrupt exit.

Fifteen days later the two would meet again, though the circumstances were significantly different. She complimented his green sweater, as if on cue as he talked about himself, his job, and his holiday. He sensed a listlessness withing her, yet never quite verbalized what the cues seemed to be telling him. She was wearing the glasses again. His mind was made up the first time she wore the glasses.

Then the sinking feeling hit our hero : she was unavailable for two weeks. Due to studies and deadlines, she left the future of their engagement askew. He grasped for an antithesis to this scenario, but alas had lost the gumption and the vocabulary to probe for understanding. Of course, this could all be in his head.

For now, our hero sits in solitude, contemplating.
